Four Categories of Traditional Printing (part 1)

1. Relief printing

Relief plate includes lead letterpress, lead copy plate, copper zinc plate, rubber relief plate, photosensitive resin plate, high elastic flexible plate, etc. The features of these layout structures are: the graphic part is convex, the blank part of the non graphic part is concave, and there is a certain height difference between the graphic part and the graphic part. In order to make the ink evenly coated on the surface of the plate, flat plate, raised graphics and text parts should be in a unified horizontal plane. For the printing plate of arc line, the raised graphic part shall be on the cylinder with the same radius.

Letterpress is a kind of printing method with a long history. After long-term development, it is mainly divided into two categories, one is the type printing method, which has been replaced by other methods. The other is flexographic printing. Its printing plate has the characteristics of high elasticity and high resolution, especially the use of water-based ink in recent years, which greatly improves the image quality of flexographic printing and makes it more environmentally friendly.

Flexographic printing is thick and colorful. Flexographic printing has a wide range of substrate. Paper, plastic film, aluminum foil, woven bag, non-woven fabric, self-adhesive, etc. can be used for flexographic printing.

Remark: After printing, here comes the lamination to protect the ink color and paper surface. BOPP thermal lamination matte film offers excellent effects in applications of spot UV, hot stamping and screen printing. With special treatment based on Matte film, BOPP Soft touch film and BOPP Anti scratch film are popularly used for book covers, magazines, brochures, deluxe gift boxes, mobilephone boxes etc.

2. Lithography

The plates used in lithography include PS plate, gravure plate, protein plate, multilayer metal plate, etc. The surface structure of these plates is characterized by that the graphic part of the plates and the non graphic blank are almost on the same plane. When printing, first moisten the non graphic part of the plate with fountain solution to form a uniform water film of a certain thickness, then moisten the graphic part of the plate with ink to form a uniform ink film of a certain thickness. Based on the principle of oil-water immiscibility, the non graphic part and the graphic part respectively depend on the water film and the ink film to resist each other's infiltration. The surface of lithography must form two kinds of surface areas: hydrophilic and hydrophobic.

Lithographic printing involves a wide range of printing materials, with good printing quality, thin ink layer (1-2 μ m), lighter color, fine graphics and text, rich layers, good image and color reduction. Most publications, packaging supplies, labels, posters and calendars are printed by single sheet offset press. For large quantities of magazines, newspapers and so on, most of them are printed by web offset press.
